“Bring the Sunshine” is the latest music video from My Second Surprise and directing duo the Perez Brothers.

Sock Monkey Sound

Ayal Nistor

“Bring the Sunshine” is the latest music video from My Second Surprise and the Perez Brothers (www.perezbros.com), you may remember the Perez Brothers from Kapwoski’s “Section 8″ video we posted last year. Once again the dircting duo came up with another humorous and interesting clip to accompany some great music.

Lead by Israeli born front man Ayal Nistor, My Second Surprise has had international success with their last video for “Perfect Cure” winning an Israeli Grammy and finding play on MTV Europe. Their second album “Time to Move On,” was mixed by Craig Schumacher (Calexico, Iron & Wine) and offers a unique blend of folk pop and an indie rock.

Filmed in the sunny hills of Oakland California, the video for “Bring the Sunshine” has been described by the Perez Brothers as the surreal collision between Yogi Bear and Grand Theft Auto. The only thing that’s missing is the airplane. Enjoy!

Overall, I like the fact that these guys are thinking outside of the box when it comes to delivering something interesting for their fans to watch. OK Go are nothing if not ingenious when it comes to funding their careers as musicians and the best thing about this band when it comes right down to it is that their music is damn good as well.
Air Review is a Dallas quintet. They played their first show in May of 2009. Their dynamic, versatile, and energetic live shows have landed them primary support slots for an eclectic group of acts including Portugal. The Man, The Boxer Rebellion, One Eskimo, Blue October, Flyleaf, Bowling for Soup and Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights. Their forthcoming EP, America’s Son, promises to further establish Air Review as a sonically diverse and ambitious act that stands to break out in a major way in 2012, simply by staying the course it has already set. The tracks “America’s Son”, “Low Wishes”, and “Waiting Lessons” have received international acclaim from the blogosphere, which include a feature in The Huffington Post. The EP will be released in the spring with one more single to be released soon.

Oakland based band Kapowski (band website) have released a video for the song “Section 8”, off of their upcoming album Boy Detective (set for release on February 2, 2012). The tune features stuttering drums, a spry bass line, a scratchy organ and a mesmeric piano line that sets the foundation for lead vocalist Jesse Rimler’s lyrics.

Filmed on location in Oakland by The Perez Brothers, along with additional footage shot in the tiny town of Carpinteria, the video for “Section 8” was inspired by the futuristic tone of the track. Pulling from their love of classic cinema, the Perez Brothers have described the film as a, “Melancholy homage to Woody Allen’s Sleeper.”

While the “Sleeper” elements are there, I personally liken the look of the Robot without meaning in the video to that ridiculous Robin William’s vehicle “Bicentennial Man”. Quirky and fun, The Perez Bothers Kapowski take the phrase “Section 8″ and turn it’s meaning on it’s head. What happens when you lose your will to live? The answer is: drink a bunch of sweet tea and go into a sugar coma.

I hate sweet tea.

“Section 8″ is off of Kapowski’s upcoming album Boy Detective, set for release on February 2, 2012.

While this might not be as cool as the Judgement Night soundtrack, this promises to be another entertaining product from this group of fine folks.
Fans of post-rock bands such as Tortoise and Maps and Atlases, Mogwai, Don Caballero/Battles, Brian Eno, and Neu! should like this.

Indie psych pop band Gauntlet Hair are going out on tour with The Dodos this summer. Fans of Animal Collective and Surfer blood will enjoy the sound of this relatively unknown pair of dudes who are named Andy and Craig, from the small-ish (23,000 population) Colorado town of Lafayette. The pair garnered a fair amount of attention after being part of the Rhinoceropolis-curated block of Denver-based bands that played at the post-SXSW Mexican extravaganza MtyMx. The band’s track “I Was Thinking…” is a pretty insatiable guitar stomp that throws some R&B and soul into the lo-fi revival pot, mixing heavily-reverbed guitars with a simple, but undeniably booty-shaking beat.

The National just released a video for “Think You Can Wait” off of the soundtrack from the new Paul Giamatti film Win Win that features former SMS interviewee, Sharon Van Etten. While just a simple performance piece with out takes from the movie, it’s still great to hear new tracks by The National and Van Etten.

Filmed in the Winter 2010/2011 in Austin, TX. and directed by Sock Monkey Sound listener Shawn Kornhauser. The video is a kick to behold and is a shot by shot re-creation of the scene from the movie which you can check out HERE if you want to compare.

“It’s Cruel” by Literature sets the perfect pace for the chase and is available on a brand new 7″ single called ‘Cincinnati’ which you can download for free on their Bandcamp site. They also are putting out a full length in March, as well as an appearance at SXSW. The band is touring the west coast now, check out the dates at http://www.voiceacademyrecords.com/shows if you live out there.

Craig Wedren, former Shudder to Think leader, just released an awesome 360 degree music video for his new single “Are We”. The song is also a part of his new album and interactive video Wand due out in May. The video is stunning in it’s use of new web technology and stands as more proof, in addition to Arcade Fire’s 2010 video for “We Used To Wait”, that video is now online and interactive.

We can’t embed the video here but you can check out the video on Wedren’s website. Keep in mind, this is probably best viewed with a high speed internet connection and a good internet browser like Google Chrome or Firefox. If you’re still using Internet Explorer (although IE 9 looks pretty damn sweet) then you must be a caveman rubbing sticks together for warmth.

Is this the future of music? Combining a unique user experience with the art itself, or is it a fad?
