Throwdown #4: Just Like Heaven

Posted on 25 June 2010 by Administrator

“Just Like Heaven” was The Cure’s breakthrough hit that brought their brand of mope rock to the masses. Dinosaur Jr. took a stab at it back in 1989 and according to Wikipedia remains Robert Smith’s favorite versioin. Back in the late 80′s and early 90′s you probably could have seen these two videos back to back on MTV’s once ground breaking late night show 120 Minutes. Now MTV sucks a fat turd and considered by some critics to be one of the reasons the record industry has taken a nosedive in recent years. Since then other bands have recorded this song as well and instead of pitting one band versus another we’re going to throw various versions of the same song into a battle royale in this installment of THROWDOWN!

Throwdown #3: REM 1983 Vs. REM 2003

Posted on 30 May 2010 by Sock Monkey Sound

Doc Brown comes crashing into the backstage area of Late Night with David Letterman at 88 miles per hour in his flying, time traveling DeLorian. Who pops out of the stainless steel marvel but the young and wide eyed members of REM, circa 1983. As a young scraggly haired Michael Stipe gets his bearing on the foreign locale, he sees a bald skinny dude with blue crap painted on his eyes that looks an awful lot like himself (or John Malkovich). It’s the REM of 2003!

“AW, HELLS NO…” screams Bill Berry as he sees some other dude playing drums, “…IT”S TIME FOR A THROWDOWN!!!!”

Throwdown #2: The Police vs. Rockwell

Posted on 21 May 2010 by Sock Monkey Sound

This weeks Throwdown is dedicated to all those scary stalkers out there. Who was the scarier stalker in the 80s, Sting or Michael Jackson? Points are rewarded of course based on song quality and video performance, but who REALLY cares about that anyway right? Maybe Rockwell, son of famed Motown founder Barry Gordy, should have called The Police on Jackson’s pale groovy ass. Too soon? Nah. Now the only question is who’s gonna get the restraining order and who’s gonna win THE THROWDOWN

The Police – Every Breath You Take

Rockwell – Somebody’s Watching Me

In this first installment of The Throwdown we pit two great acts in their own right, Belle & Sebastian VS. Hall & Oates, against each other for dominance. Who wins? You decide. What do they win. Absolutely nothing.

Belle & Sebastian – Step Into My Office (2003)

Hall & Oates- I Can’t Go For That (1983)
