Overall, I like the fact that these guys are thinking outside of the box when it comes to delivering something interesting for their fans to watch. OK Go are nothing if not ingenious when it comes to funding their careers as musicians and the best thing about this band when it comes right down to it is that their music is damn good as well. What was cool about this outing on Conan is that Annie Clark and her band decided to poke a little fun at Elvis Costello’s 1977 performance on Saturday Night Live where he interrupted his band a a couple of bars into “Less Than Zero” and then launching into “Radio Radio”.

One of our favorites, Sharon Van Etten (interview link), is back with a Late Night with Jimmy Fallon performance of the song “Serpents” off of her new album TRAMP on February 7, 2012. If 2011 was the year of Bon Iver, it’s quite possible that 2012 will be the year of Sharon Van Etten. Check out Aaron Dessner of The National playing a little slide guitar with Van Etten’s band; Dessner produced the new album. I, along with many others, can’t wait for this.

Oakland based band Kapowski (band website) have released a video for the song “Section 8”, off of their upcoming album Boy Detective (set for release on February 2, 2012). The tune features stuttering drums, a spry bass line, a scratchy organ and a mesmeric piano line that sets the foundation for lead vocalist Jesse Rimler’s lyrics.

Filmed on location in Oakland by The Perez Brothers, along with additional footage shot in the tiny town of Carpinteria, the video for “Section 8” was inspired by the futuristic tone of the track. Pulling from their love of classic cinema, the Perez Brothers have described the film as a, “Melancholy homage to Woody Allen’s Sleeper.”

While the “Sleeper” elements are there, I personally liken the look of the Robot without meaning in the video to that ridiculous Robin William’s vehicle “Bicentennial Man”. Quirky and fun, The Perez Bothers Kapowski take the phrase “Section 8″ and turn it’s meaning on it’s head. What happens when you lose your will to live? The answer is: drink a bunch of sweet tea and go into a sugar coma.

I hate sweet tea.

“Section 8″ is off of Kapowski’s upcoming album Boy Detective, set for release on February 2, 2012.

Included in the deluxe package are videos made for each of the 10 songs on the album. Many of the videos are tone poems for your eyes that do an effective job of conveying an interpretation of feelings linked to the songs. Pretty to watch at first but also kind of boring unless you’re into artsy stuff of course. What these videos are really missing is some booty shaking as well as a cameo by Kenny Loggins during the clip for Beth/Rest. Check out all of the videos at the band’s You Tube page.

Video for "Icarus" by the Italian band The Storylines, featuring a dog's eye view of the world.

Sock Monkey Sound

The Storylines began in 2006, in a 17-inhabitant town called Piancavallo, in the mountains looking at the city of Pordenone in north-eastern Italy. The single Icarus is from the bands debut “June Leaves” (Download on Bandcamp for FREE), their first full-length album released by the independent label Megaphone Records.

According to the band, the video, created by Edoardo Vojvoda, was born out of the idea of portraying what goes on in a dog’s brain during a normal day: boredom from being neglected, the desire to escape, freedom; finally leading to melancholy and homesickness. Vojvoda even went as far as toning down the Reds and Greens from the video considering that dogs don’t discern between Red and Green in the color spectrum.

Pretty cool stuff, the video does a nice job of complementing the music and giving the viewer a sense the dogs life. It makes me want to go home and hug my dog.

Video for Battles "My Machine" video featuring synth-pop overlord Gary Numan

Sock Monkey Sound

One of my favorite musical discoveries this year is the band Battles. Like many folks out there I discovered the band whilst checking out a clip from Late Night With Jimmy Fallon and really dug what I saw. The bands 2011 Gloss Drop gets constant rotation on my Spotify playlists and at times really helps me get through the work day with it’s propulsive beats and intricate compositions. Much like the gooey pink substance on the album cover, Battles is candy for my brain.

The single “My Machines” features 80′s synthesizer god Gary Numan on vocals and this great video via The Creators Project.

"We Gotta Get Out of This Place ", performed by The Animals, was written in 1965 by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil (Brill-Building-era composers responsible for many timeless hits). The song's timeless angst has been embraced by many fed-up, walks of life in the past 5 decades; the military, graduates, and most recently, peasants known as Rockfordians from Illinois who are seeking a better walk of life somewhere else.

Sock Monkey Sound

“We Gotta Get Out of This Place ”, performed by The Animals, was written in 1965 by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil (Brill-Building-era composers responsible for many hits). The song’s timeless angst has been embraced by many fed-up, walks of life in the past 5 decades; the military, graduates, the working class and most recently, peasants known as Rockfordians from Illinois who are seeking a decent–we know ‘better’ is too much to ask or work hard for anymore–walk of life somewhere else.

Rise, peasants, rise! This is your song– now, leave!
Oink oink, bah bah, moo.

Micky Rosenquist, Rockford, IL area musician, instructor and drummer for many midwestern bands (Cameron McGill & What Army, Miles Nielsen & The Rusted Hearts, Cory Chisel & The Wandering Sons, & more) has launched his his own solo project. Production on “Micky Rosenquist & The Black Squirrel“ record began in late August at Rosenquist’s own studio space, Underground Squirrel Studio in Rockford, IL.

The record will feature Rosenquist’s songs with many musicians he’s played with or befriended over the years making appearances throughout. Rosenquist is taking the reigns on many instruments while handing off the rhythm duties to session drummer/percussionist, Darren Garvey (Cameron McGill & What Army, Andreas Kapsalais Trio) & bassist, Karl Ropp (The Snaggs, Das Boton, The Gomows). Appearances by Cameron McGill, Miles Nielsen, Kevin Schwitters (The Braves), Barrett Martin (The Gomows), and many more are planned to flesh out a full-length album by 2012. The Black Squirrel Project is being co-produced by Daniel McMahon, Andy Whorehall and Rosenquist.
