Abel’s Island by William Steig
William Steig may have been a genius but, sadly, his picture book legacy has certainly done a disservice to his talent as a writer. Although Abel’s Island is disjointed, including the occasional untied up loose end, his prose flows like the sweet nectar of life that is a pressed cup of Peet’s Kenya.

City of Thieves by David Benioff is a stunning book with an excellent concept. It’s a WWII buddy book about two Soviet men who are forced to find a dozen eggs (a rarity during this time) for a brutal Soviet general so that the general’s wife can bake a cake for their daughter’s impending wedding.

Black Hole by Charles Burns
Charles Burns’ “Black Hole” graphic novel was a very quick read, but far from an easy one mentally or physically. The setting is 1970′s Seattle and local high school kids are growing mutations on their bodies after having sex with infected partners.
