NXNE – The Dodos at The Phoenix 6/16/11

North by Northeast 2011

At The Phoenix in Toronto for the NXNE festival, the crowd grew larger and larger in anticipation for The Dodos on Thursday night.

The three piece indie rock band – two guitars and drums – performed their own sound check, which was absolutely brutal and totally not their faults.

But after the mayhem of a microphone malfunction during sound check, the three Dodos raised their hands, tapped their heads and kicked off their set.

Immediately, four black beach balls appeared from no where and bounced wildly as the heavy distorted music washed over the restless crowd.

Now although the bouncing of the beach balls was short lived, the crowd’s love and excitement for the band continued ten fold.

The melodic guitar work, moving vocals and heart pounding drums provided a comfort for the crowd, creating a sound familiar to all.

To some, it was music to go absolutely crazy too and rock out. For others it was music to hug, cuddle and kiss to.

Half way through the dynamic set, a fan screamed from the crowd, “I love your tiger shirt!” The drummer laughed, turned around and said, “Do you like the back?”

At this the large yet intimate crowd laughed and cheered.

Then to finish off the night, The Dodos kicked things into high gear and powered through their hit track “Fools.” The distortion was killer and the thick drums were rattling while everyone grooved in their own way.

And that’s what was so amazing about The Dodos – not only did they put on a great show, they modestly rocked the hell out and at the time sang songs for the helpless romantics.
