This past Saturday NXNE brought one of it’s biggest acts to date into the heart of downtown Toronto, when The Flaming Lips performed at Yonge and Dundas square. With other great openers such as Of Montreal, Portugal. The Man, as well as many others the square was packed all afternoon. Right around 9 though when Flaming Lips were scheduled to perform the square was overflowing into the surrounding streets. At about quarter after 9 the show began, and with the hundreds of confetti explosions, giant coloured balloons, as well as the band members emerging one at a time through the back of the stage the crowd went crazy. The fun continued as singer Wayne Coyne walked across the crowd in his classic giant plastic bubble, supported by excited fans wearing foam lips on their hands. The Lips played a great set, breaking out their classic hit She Don’t Use Jelly” early on in the night making for a great crowd sing-along. They also played a fantastic cover of Radiohead’s Knives Out” in tribute to everyone affected by the tragic stage collapse that occurred earlier that day in Downsview Park.  Radiohead’s drum technician was tragically killed in the accident, forcing the band to cancel 7 upcoming European dates(Pop Blend). Good vibes continued throughout the night climaxing in Wayne Coyne’s giant laser shooting hands, and the epic encore Do You Realize??”. The group left their audience in high spirits and covered in confetti, the only people not having a great time Saturday night might be whoever had to clean up.
